Who are the seven archangels?
The seven archangels depicted in a stained glass window in the Church of Saint Michael and All Angels (Brighton, England).
An archangel is a high-ranking celestial being in the angelic hierarchies. The word "archangel" comes from the Greek "archangelos", which means "chief messenger". Archangels are considered powerful beings and close to divinity, with a rank above common angels in the celestial hierarchy, and various functions and roles are attributed to them, which may vary according to traditions and individual beliefs.
Archangels are recognized in various religious traditions, such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, as well as in spiritual and esoteric teachings. Archangels are considered to possess specific qualities and functions, such as protection, spiritual guidance, healing, justice, and enlightenment. They are also credited with the ability to help human beings in various areas of their lives, such as health, relationships, prosperity and spiritual growth.
The names and specific attributes of the archangels may vary in different traditions and spiritual teachings, although the best known are:
- Michael is the warrior archangel and protector against evil . He leads the heavenly armies and fights against the evil forces.
- Gabriel is the divine messenger and is associated with revelation and communication. In the Christian tradition, it is he who announces the birth of Jesus to Mary.
- Tzafqiel is the archangel of contemplation and divine wisdom. He is related to deep spiritual knowledge.
